Gema Dumitru, MD, MPH

Senior Advisor

Gema Dumitru, MD, MPH, retired from CDC where she was a Health Scientist with over two decades of public health experience. From 2011 to 2025 Dr. Dumitru worked within the Division of HIV Prevention (DHP) at the National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention. She contributed her work to the completion of several key recommendations in the field of HIV such as  the  “Updated Recommendations for HIV Prevention with Adults and Adolescents with HIV in the United States”, “Antiretroviral Postexposure Prophylaxis After Sexual, Injection Drug Use, or Other Nonoccupational Exposure to HIV”,  “Preexposure Prophylaxis for the Prevention of HIV Infection in the United States”.


More recently she completed the “Scoping review to inform the Revised Recommendations for HIV Testing of Pregnant Women in Health-Care Settings” project which aims to identify gaps in the research knowledge base, map out key concepts related to pregnancy testing and report findings to inform future research.

 

Previously Dr. Dumitru contributed her work within the agency in several other departments and collaborated on focal projects for obesity prevention, asthma, and environmental health, while continuing to advance her expertise in public health and drawing on her medical background. Some of the related publications include “Public health interventions for asthma: an umbrella review”, “Effectiveness of home-based, multi-trigger, multicomponent interventions with an environmental focus for reducing asthma morbidity”, “Office-based motivational interviewing to prevent childhood obesity”.


Dr. Dumitru is committed to advancing population health and improving health outcomes through collaborative, data-driven approaches.
